Send this bitch up, it can go down (from here)
Yeezus might very well be the pinnacle of Yeezy's career. The album in its entirety was sent from the heavens which makes it evident as to why Kanye describes himself as a god. Seriously, Yeezus is the best album ever and if you disagree with me there might just be 'Blood On The Leaves' (totally kidding). Yeezus was released in June of 2013 and I am so impressed with how many songs I like out of the relatively short (ten tracks) album. The album is unorthodox, lewd, and a will leave you a little dumbfounded (croissants are mentioned a lot). Yeezus is genre bending or rather genre blending with some punk, rock, maybe some new wave, and of course hip hop. Having said that, it works. I can't stress enough how much I think the entire album is worth a listen but if you're like me and want to see what you're getting into first, here's a track by track rundown:
1. On Sight:
This song reminds me of Cotton Gin on a weird night. A little clubby, but not easy to dance to no matter how many vodka sprites you've consumed. The beat steadies and Kanye raps, "A monster about to come alive again." On Sight isn't by any means a top track on the album, but it is a solid start.
2. Black Skinhead:
Timeless. If you're out there trying to step up your 'aux cord' game, play this song. Everyone loves a good little throwback and it never fails to hype my friends and I up. Definitely a song to turn the volume up on."So follow me up cause this shit 'bout to go down," and I promise it will if you play this song. Black Skinhead will not only get you pumped up, but it is also woke. Approaching the topic of interracial dating, West sounds wiser than ever. Who would've thought you could mix such an important message into a party song.
3. I Am A God:
Painful screeches, screams, and croissants. Weird- even for Kanye. I think the message that Kanye is trying to convey is that being a god isn't all glory but he definitely lost me on this one. I guess it's an ode to the haters. I Am A God is a solid C at best.
4. New Slaves:
Possibly the most familiar track thanks to the live "SNL" performance. Kanye drives home that he's a shepherd in a world full of sheep, "You see there's leaders and there's followers." My favorite line is unapologetically lewd, "But I'd rather be a dick than a swallower." Kanye's delivery methods might not be the most socially acceptable but you have to admit, he's not wrong. The tune itself is pretty basic and run of the mill- but don't fix what ain't broke, right?
5. Hold My Liquor:
Drunk Kanye and auto-tune with a few twists and turns. The song covers the topic of drunk ex-sex, which isn't great just like this track. Sorry not sorry.
6. I'm In It:
If you want to hear a detailed description of what Kanye plans to do in the bedroom, this is your song. Gross, I know. This track is like mass phone sex. Having said that, if you block out the lyrics the track goes pretty damn hard. Kanye is definitely in beast mode on this track. Good luck filtering out those creepy sexual remarks though.
7. Blood On The Leaves:
This track has relatable written all over it. Failed relationships? "I just need to clear my mind now," we're all experts on that. Blood On The Leaves is not your traditional hip-hop song by any means but you should listen to all six minutes of it. Nina Simone's "Strange Fruit," works so well on this track. The beat quickens and West raps, "It's been racing since the summer time." Yeezy's lyrics match up exactly with the beat. Blood On The Leaves earns a top three spot on this album.
8. Guilt Trip:
More failed relationship rhetoric. This track is low on the totem pole. Some inaudible lyrics and the lyrics that you can understand will undoubtedly put you in your feels. The new wave sound is refreshing as is Kanye publicly shaming himself (yes, I know). This track isn't my favorite but I appreciate change.
9. Send It Up:
This track is another aux cord suggestion of mine. Pure badass gangster rap. Send It Up is so Kanye- sarcastic remarks and all, "She say "Can you get my friends in the club?" I say "Can you get my Benz in the club?" If not, treat your friends like my Benz. Park they ass outside 'til the evenin' end." The lyrics are so Kanye and the sound is a total pick me up. Another top three track without question.
10. Bound 2:
"Uh-huh, honey" perfectly sums up how I feel about this song. It gave me that old Kanye (circa 2005) feeling. This track is so good it makes me a little teary eyed that the album is over. Good news, you can just listen to it on repeat (I won't judge). This track shows a different side of Kanye. Maybe he isn't the asshole we thought he was? Unlikely, but we can at least pretend for three minutes and forty nine seconds. Again, another unconventional tune that's just good.
Just listen to it- the entire thing.
